“Nationality” — A Trademark of NUST MISIS

On April 20th, 2017, NUST MISIS hosted the 4th traditional Day of Nationalities, which gathered more than 1,500 participants from 14 Moscow universities. Students from 30 world countries presented their traditional cultures and cuisines. Among the distinguished guests were representatives of the embassies of Vietnam, Mongolia, Afghanistan, countries of Latin America, and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

The Day of Nationalities has been held at NUST MISIS since 2013. The event began as a simple flashmob with national dances in NUST MISIS`s main yard, accompanied by a launch of balloons designed after the tricolored Russian flag—all of which was organized by the NUST MISIS International Friendship Club.

“We wanted to show that we are a part of Russia, one big multinational country. NUST MISIS has united us and has become a second home for everyone who studies here”, said Elina Hayrapetyan, founder and head of the NUST MISIS International Friendship Club.

In 2016, for the first time in Russia, the International Congress of Students Association organized together with the All-Russian International Union of Youth under the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science and the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs to help create events like the Day of Nationalities at NUST MISIS. The Congress was organized with the aim of developing the networking system of student unions and consolidating the experience of different Russian and foreign universities.

“NUST MISIS sees its mission not only as the creation of comfortable conditions for living, obtaining professional education, and immersing oneself into the world of science, but also to provide opportunities for the personal development of every student, to fill one’s university years with bright and interesting events. Taking into account the cultural diversity here, we pay great attention to maintaining a favorable environment which considers the identity and traditions of different people. Our University pursues a policy aimed at mutual cultural enrichment. So, the representatives of different nations gather at the Day of Nationalities to share their national and cultural traditions”, — said Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISIS.

17,000 students from every Russian region and 69 world countries study at NUST MISIS. The University is 7th in the “Share of International Students” indicator among all participants of the global education QS BRICS Ranking, as well as 4th (in the same indicator) among higher educational institutions in Russia.
