NUST MISIS holds the first Russian-Latin American Student Forum

On May 19th, 2016 the first Russian-Latin American Student Forum was held at NUST MISIS. The opening of the Latin American Student Cultural Club occurred during the forum.

The forum attracted Alexander Shchetinin, Director of the Latin American Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Juan Eduardo Eguiguren, Ambassador of the Chilean Embassy, and numerous representatives from Central and South American embassies, as well as students from both Russian and Latin American universities.

“NUST MISIS and Latin American countries have been collaborating in the fields of science and education for more than 30 years. Among NUST MISIS alumni are hundreds of citizens from Central and South America. Undoubtedly, hosting the Russian-Latin American Student Forum at our university will contribute to the development of a mutually beneficial cooperation, and the youth of our countries will be given more opportunities for education, participation in scientific and research activities, and job placement”, said Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISIS.

NUST MISIS and Latin American universities have had frequent collaborations for quite a while, but today the relationships are skyrocketing to brand new levels. In January 2016, through bilateral cooperation between NUST MISIS and universities in Central and Latin American countries, we were proudly able to announce the initiative for the creation of the Research and Education Center. The main activities of the center will be developing not only fields within the mining industry, but some of the other fields NUST MISIS specializes in. The initiative was supported by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Committee of Assistance & Economic Cooperation with Latin American Countries.

Alexander Shchetinin noted that training young and promising specialists is a significant factor in productively developing relationships between Russia and Latin America further. Additionally, Juan Eduardo Eguiguren, the Chilean Ambassador here in Russia, said that youth from Latin American countries happily come to study in Russia, and often dedicate a large part of their lives to Russia, through either staying here to work or building partnernerships and relationships with Russian companies.

The Latin American Student Cultural Club was a considerable part of the forum. The Club’s first meeting is scheduled

on May 26, 2016.
