NUST MISIS Student Council Setting the Bar for Student Governments

The NUST MISIS Student Council has become the best among the leading universities in Russia in the “Student Trust” nomination. The results were obtained through a composition of the first “Ranking of Students Councils at Educational Institutions of Higher Education”. The award ceremony was held during the conference “The Establishment of Rankings for Students Councils”. The results were presented by Artem Khromov, a Student`s Rights Ombudsman.

The Ranking is meant to be a kind of social navigator for students, and takes into account parameters that are essential for students: a university`s infrastructure, the quality of lectures and seminars, sports activities, lifestyle opportunities, and living conditions in student residence halls, among other things.

272 Student Councils from educational institutions within Russia participated in the Ranking. Candidate institutions were evaluated for three categories: “The Development of Student Self-Government”, “Openness and Transparency”, and “Financial Support for Activities”. In all three categories NUST MISIS ranked in the top-10.

In the “Financial Support for Activities” nomination, which was held separately among 27 leading universities in Russia, the NUST MISIS Student Council was voted top-5.

Over the course of 2016, NUST MISIS’s Student Council supported 32 student enterprises from 9 different activity spheres and implemented over 350 projects in total. NUST MISIS student unions (Science Community, Mass Media, Industrial Design Club, etc.) are frequently recognized as the best in all-Russian competitions. Additionally, NUST MISIS students actively participate in volunteering activities, including charity projects organized by OMK, the university`s key strategic partner.

The results of the first Ranking have shown the effectiveness of student organizations in Russian universities, and due to their effectiveness, student government is on the rise: 36.2% of student councils are present within university administration, and 88.6% in academic boards, which directly indicates the involvement of students in the co-management of universities. Also significant are the numbers which demonstrate the ubiquitous hand student government has in many vital facets of university administration: 92.6% of councils participate in the activities of scholarship committees, 69.8% participate in tutorial committees and committees on the quality of education, and 60.4% take part in committees working on the process of transferring students from a paid to a tuition-free education.
