Quantum Computer: Still Myth or Reality?

July 13 2015, the III International Conference on Quantum Technologies was organized by the Russian Quantum Center in Moscow. One of the leading speakers and experts of the conference was Alexey Ustinov, Head of the Superconducting Metamaterials Laboratory at NUST MISIS, member of the Scientific Council of the Russian Quantum Center, Head of the Laboratory of Experimental Physics and Technology, University of Karlsruhe, Germany.

Popular science lecture by Alexey Ustinov “Quantum Computer: Still Myth or Reality?” opened quantum forum and set the tone and direction of all further discussions.

According to the scientist, quantum computers, capable to solve any computational problem, in principle, can be created in 10 years. Creating such a computer would require a mass of new technological developments and innovation — creating a system of error correction at the quantum level, the special “smeared” logical qubits, but in general, according to Ustinov such a device may appear in this period.

“Right now I’m leaning towards the view that the creation of a universal computing device based on quantum systems, in principle, is possible. For a long time I was a pessimist in this area, but now with the development of technology and understanding of the principles of operation of such systems even the most cautious optimists become pessimists”, said Alexey Ustinov.

In 2013, scientists from the laboratory of Superconducting Materials at NUST MISIS, led by Alexey Ustinov, were the first in Russia who measured the qubit. In May 2015, researchers from leading universities and research centers (NUST MISIS, RCC, MIPT, etc.) established the country’s first superconducting qubit required to produce a quantum computer. As noted by Alexey Ustinov, “in Russia there is a critical mass of research centers, equipment, technology, researchers, and development which will allow at a global level competing with the leading research centers in the creation of quantum computers.”
