NUST MISIS launches a new math course on the EdX platform

On October 15, the NUST MISIS online course Complex Analysis, dedicated to the application of complex analysis methods in real life, will be launched on one of the world’s leading open education platforms, EdX.

The course program is built on the principle “from simple to complex” and includes the development of both the basic principles of addition and multiplication of complex numbers, as well as the calculations of Fourier-type integrals found in almost all engineering problems. Students of the course will learn to apply the theory of functions of a complex variable in practice.

“The connection of mathematical disciplines with problems of the real world is usually difficult to understand, so for students, this course is a chance not only to get acquainted with practice-oriented engineering problems but also to make sure that this knowledge is in demand. The next step for the professional growth of our students can be participation in the ‘Complex Analysis with Physical Applications’ course together with engineers from the world’s leading corporations. Also, participation in such courses is an opportunity to improve the level of proficiency in English (ESP),” said Natalia Podvoiskaya, Ph.D., Director of the NUST MISIS College of Basic Professional Studies, Associate Professor of the NUST MISIS Department of Social Sciences and Technologies.

The authors of the Complex Analysis course are Yaroslav Rodionov, Associate Professor of the NUST MISIS Department of Theoretical Physics and Quantum Technologies, and Konstantin Tikhonov, Ph.D., Researcher at the RAS Landau Institute. The course development was supported by specialists from the NUST MISIS School of Pedagogical Excellence.

The Complex Analysis course is an introduction to the advanced Complex Analysis with Physical Applications course, which was created in 2017. During its existence, the course was launched on the EdX platform twice — in 2017 and 2019. During this time, more than 6,000 people from 40 countries of the world have attended it. The Complex Analysis basic course has been created so that as many specialists as possible could master modern methods of complex analysis and apply them in their professional life.

For students of the College of New Materials and Nanotechnologies and the College of IT & Automated Control Systems, the course “Theory of functions of a complex variable” is included in the compulsory program of the second year of the bachelor’s degree.
