The finale of the CUP MISIS CASE championship for school children and students, which attracted over 1500 participants from 60 universities and schools from 42 Russian regions, was recently held at NUST MISIS. Participants were given real business cases, provided by Novolipetsk Steel, the 2018 championship’s general partner, to solve. Teams from Moscow, Novotroitsk, Buguruslan, and Kolomna were named the championship’s winners.
The Cup MISIS Case is an annual case-championship for students and school children. NUST MISIS launched the project in 2014 as a team competition to solve business cases in the field of mining & metallurgical profiles. In the five years of its existence, the championship has already reached an international level. The 2018 CUP MISIS CASE attracted more than 1500 students and school children from 60 universities and schools from 42 Russian regions.
The business cases for this year’s competition were presented by NLMK, the championship’s general partner. Representatives of NUST MISIS`s key business partners such as Severstal, Rusal, Chelpipe, AIRLIQUIDE and others were among the members of the expert jury.
In addition, the “Languages and communications” section for linguists, developed jointly with the Cambridge University Press, debuted this year.
45 teams of school, junior (1st-3rd university years) and senior (4th+ university years) sections entered the finale. The finalists in the engineering section had to solve the case “Analysis of variants for using slag of metallurgical production at the Lipetsk site and the necessary technological solutions”, and the finalists in the linguistic section had to solve the case of “The online model of education in Russia”.
“We tried to approach our decision comprehensively. We proposed several methods of crushed and granulated slag production at the NLMK site. We also considered the possible consumers of these products and their social aspects. NLMK can help and assist with the implementation of the construction project for the Lipetsk flood control canal”, said Viktoriya Aksyonova, a NUST MISIS student and captain of the winning team in the senior engineering section.
"This championship gave us an opportunity to unite as a strong team in the process of solving the case. We were incredibly engaged in the solution of our linguistic case since we previously hadn’t solved such cases. We had to use all our potential, creativity and knowledge. Surely, we are thrilled to have won the first championship in the “Languages and communications” category, shared Ruzanna Bondar from the Moscow Region State Institute of Humanities and Social Studies, the captain of the winning team in the senior linguistic section.
Representatives of the winning teams and prizewinners will be given the opportunity to enroll in NUST MISIS on special conditions — members of 1st place teams will be given 10 additional points on their Unified State Exam results, and 5 additional points will be given to people on the 2nd and 3rd place teams.
“I would like to note that with good teamwork, everything worked out perfectly and each member of each team performed and defended their part of the work well. The cases were developed by employees of the Research & Development Directorate of NLMK`s research division, and a number of finalists` works made a particularly positive impression on us. That`s why we have established a special prize for teams that may not have won, but [performed enough to get our attention]. That prize is a paid internship at our company”, said Sergey Saltykov, chief specialist at NLMK`s Research & Development Division.
AIRLIQUIDE, Chelpipe, and Severstal prepared special prizes such as offers for internships and mentoring programs, among other memorable gifts.
The Cup MISIS Case championship is held by the NUST MISIS Career Center through the support of the Russian Ministry of Science and Education and partner companies. The case-championship is organized as part of the NUST MISIS Student Associations Development Program.
