On September 9th, 2017, Dale Dougherty, the leading advocate of the Maker Movement, founder of the Make: Magazine 2005, creator of world`s first commercial website, and author of the term “Web 2.0”, will deliver a speech at Maker Faire Moscow-2017, which will be held at NUST MISIS. The topic of his presentation will be “Maker City: the Ecosystem of the Maker Movement and City Development”.
Dale Dougherty began his career as a co-founder of O`Reilly Media, a famous American technical publishing company. In May 1993, he developed GNN (Global Network Navigator), the first commercial website.
In 2005, Dougherty founded Make: Magazine, which first used the term “makers” to describe people who enjoy “hands-on” work and play: the design and creation of things from a potter`s wheel to engineer-robotics.
He started Maker Faire in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2006. In just 11 years Maker Faire has become a global network of flagship and local (independently produced) festivals in 40 countries, and is now world`s largest exhibition of technical innovations created by ordinary people, as well as a world-famous festival of technologies and popular science. Around 200 events with 1.5 million attendees are held annually.
Make: Magazine and Maker Faire Festival are the catalysts of the maker movement. According to Dougherty, the Maker Movement has the potential to transform the educational experience of students and introduce them to the practice of innovation through play and tinkering.
In 2011 Dougherty was honored at the White House as a “Champion of Change” through an initiative that honors Americans who are “doing extraordinary things in their communities to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world.” At the 2014 White House Maker Faire he was introduced by President Obama as an American innovator making significant contributions to the fields of education and business.
