Students of MISIS University participated in the international student summer school at the Harbin University of Technology, focusing on the areas of “Artificial Intelligence” and “Using Artificial Intelligence in Enterprise Management”. The students spent two weeks in Harbin learning how to analyze models for 3D reconstruction of objects from images.
Following the completion of the program, the students conducted a group project on the topic of “3D reconstruction of an object from an image”. This area, due to its complexity, is now considered one of the fundamental problems in machine vision. Most existing systems require the uploading of multiple photos of the same object from different angles in order to create a 3D object. The participants analyzed new machine learning models that are designed to create 3D objects from two-dimensional images.
“While working on the project, we analyzed the 3D reconstruction model — Era3D — and identified its main advantages. Era3D allows users to generate 3D objects based on 2D images. We identified the main components that contribute to its high accuracy. Firstly, it has an algorithm that eliminates distortion caused by inconsistencies in camera parameters. This algorithm ensures that the generated 3D models are accurate and precise. Secondly, there is a unique approach that allows machine learning models to generate 3D objects from arbitrary images. This approach ensures that the models can handle a wide range of images with varying degrees of complexity. Thirdly, there is a modified layer in the neural network that optimizes memory usage and reduces processing time. This layer ensures that the model operates efficiently and quickly. To demonstrate the model’s capabilities, we created an intuitive interface using Streamlit and wrapped the model in Docker. This allows users to easily interact with the model and see the results in real-time”, said Maria Ulyanova, a third-year MISIS University student.
The classes were taught by instructors from some of the world’s most prestigious universities: Edith Cowan University (Австралия), Case Western Reserve University (США), University of Macau, Harbin Institute of Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
“The Institute of Computer Science provides comprehensive support to students: from business trips to competitions to the organization of international internships. To support students, NUST MISIS has covered the costs of compensating for transit to Harbin. The topic of the internship — artificial intelligence — is an important area of work for our university. This is a promising area in the field of information technology, and the skills of working with neural networks will help young professionals find employment,” said Sergey Solodov, Director of the NUST MISIS Institute of Computer Science.
This year, the participants of the summer school in the field of Artificial Intelligence were 3rd year students of the NUST MISIS Institute of Computer Science, active participants of the hackathon club of the university: Maria Ulyanova, Yaroslav Romanenko, Sergey Martynov, Roman Shinkarenko, Nikolai Alexandrov. Maria Zhukova, a graduate of NUST MISIS, was trained in the track “Using artificial intelligence in enterprise management”.
The NUST MISIS Institute of Computer Science has a Center for Technology Competitions and Olympiads, which aims to develop a hackathon club. The club’s members regularly win large IT contests in Russia, having won over 20 million rubles since 2021. Student teams from the club have won 135 prizes at 80 different hackathons.
