This decision was made by the Council of Rectors of Universities of the Egyptian Ministry of Education.

The list of universities is published on the official website of the Supreme Council of Rectors and is divided into four categories: medicine (pharmaceuticals, dentistry and general medicine), engineering, information systems and technologies, culture and art.

NUST MISIS has many years of successful interaction with the scientific community of Egypt as well as experience in joint work with Egyptian enterprises, including training personnel for the country’s economy. In particular, in 2019, the university reached an agreement with representatives of the embassies of 20 African states on the creation of management training programs for the mining and metallurgical industry at NUST MISIS.

Egyptian students choose to study at the university’s specialties related to electricity, computer science and engineering, nanotechnology and linguistics.

World-class experts discussed the benefits of transnational education for universities, students and employees, as well as the main problems of Russian and British universities in the development and implementation of joint/double degree programs. The organizer of the forum is NUST MISIS with the support of the Culture and Education Department of the British Embassy in Moscow.

At the panel discussion, representatives of four Russian universities actively developing international cooperation — NUST MISIS, MGIMO, Russian State University for the Humanities and National Research University Higher School of Economics — discussed the current state of the transnational education market and the prospects for joint, double and dual degree programs. The experts underlined the importance of the language component and personal contact.

The participants of the discussion agreed that the main advantage of distance education in this context is the reduction of costs for universities and students, which makes a diploma from a foreign university affordable for more people. At the same time, the speakers emphasized that full immersion in the culture of the country is not possible online due to the lack of personal contact that contributes to the achievement of trust.

“NUST MISIS has examples of successful projects with British universities. For example, in 2010, with the support of Cambridge University Press, we launched a blended English language program, which is still working and is showing excellent results. Also, in 2019 we managed to open a School of pedagogical mastery with the aim of continuous improvement of teachers’ qualifications and the quality of education. This project is being implemented through collaboration with colleagues from University College London. Transnational education is more than incoming and outgoing academic mobility. I believe that mutually beneficial cooperation in this area can bring invaluable results,” said Timothy O’Connor, Vice-Rector for Education at NUST MISIS.

Experts from the British side spoke about the features and benefits of transnational education for universities in the United Kingdom. According to Karen Ottewell, Director of Academic Development & Training for International Students at the University of Cambridge, such programs increase the university’s prestige in other countries and help attract students at the global market. In addition, in the implementation of transnational education programs, the relations of universities with local business and international organizations are more actively developing.

“Joint, double and dual degree programs allow students to gain invaluable international experience from an academic, cultural and linguistic point of view, as well as to expand opportunities for teachers to work abroad. For partners, cooperation with British universities means access to world-class higher education and increasing the competitiveness of students and graduates in the labor market,” explained Karen Ottewell.

British experts emphasized that when developing transnational education programs, all participating universities should have their strengths and complement each other: the market, access to resources, educational offer, etc. According to the speakers of the forum, it is vital to clearly define the areas of responsibility and expectations from the second party in the very first agreements. Also, it is important to define economic priorities, cultural differences and build strong relationships based on mutual trust. The language issue plays an important role since open communication between the two universities is the basis for the effective implementation of the program.

“Transnational Education: Joint/Double/Dual Degrees” is the sixth out of eight online forums within the UK-Russia University Alliance program initiated by the Culture and Education Department of the British Embassy in Moscow. The events held are dedicated to a wide variety of topics: from issues of academic mobility of students to the problem of climate change.

In January 2020, Chinese students from NUST MISIS were transferred to individual curricula, allowing them to study remotely from home. The program, originally designed for a month, was extended due to the epidemiological situation, which does not prevent Chinese citizens from fully mastering the educational program and successfully preparing for graduation works.

Currently, there are 43 students from China studying at NUST MISIS, 12 of them are in Russia, and 31, who did not have time to return from vacation, are in China. All of them are transferred to individual curricula and remotely go through an educational program under the guidance of curators and teachers.

“I like the distance learning format. Thanks to it, I can continue to study, being thousands of kilometers away from the university. I want to return to Russia as soon as possible. I miss my friends,” says Liu Binbin, a 4th-year undergraduate student in the Department of Economics at NUST MISIS, who went home for the winter holidays and did not manage to return to Russia on time due to the quarantine.

As her scientific advisor, associate professor of the Department of Economics of NUST “MISiS”, Ph.D. Alexander Aleksakhin notes: “We are conducting training in the last semester and writing the thesis remotely. To conduct classes and write tests, we use the Canvas University educational platform, Zoom video conferencing service, etc. As a research supervisor, I advise Liu Binbin on emerging issues using the WhatsApp messenger and e-mail. I think that the educational process will be completed successfully and on time.”

Chinese students note that distance learning allows them to master the material on time, despite the difficult epidemiological situation in the world.

According to Gao Zhengfeng, a first-year student of the NUST MISIS Advanced Materials Science English-taught program, he can continue to study fully thanks to the support of the university: “It is valuable to me that the university provided me with such an opportunity in this difficult time for the whole world. Professors send assignments through curators and group leaders. Almost every day we call up fellow students and discuss the material covered, do our homework. The only difficulty is the difference in time zones. I am looking forward to my return to Moscow! ”

For teachers, this situation is both a challenge and an opportunity to be creative in adapting the material to a new format. The technical capabilities of NUST MISIS allow them to quickly respond to changing conditions and give students the material in the required volume and without failures in time.

“Despite the epidemiological situation, the classes in the framework of my course ‘Materials of Quantum Electronics’ have not been interrupted and are held on schedule and in full. The decision on the distance learning option was made promptly and we, the lecturers, also quickly adjusted our curricula and processed the working materials to give the course material as fully and conveniently as possible to the students, says the professor of the English-taught Master’s program, associate professor at NUST MISIS, Ph.D. Oleg Rabinovich. — We encountered difficulties in visualizing the material, but the Zoom platform solved these problems. Another problem is that the online format does not allow to provide students with real samples of the studied devices to understand the features of their work. We will have to postpone these classes to a later period when they return to education in classrooms and laboratories.

Chinese students have shown themselves to be attentive and involved students: they actively ask questions, clarify the nuances. This creates the feeling of a standard conversation in the audience. The only difficulty is the feedback — the scientific spirit is floating in the audience, but on the Internet — everything is more reserved. However, scientific jokes succeed even with this educational format. It is evident that the undergraduates are not just being on quarantine, but want to get knowledge and pass the exam well.”

In general, the educational process has not undergone major changes: students receive theoretical material, work with their supervisors and mentors. But everything is online. At the same time, students have the opportunity to flexibly change the class schedule, redistribute individual educational modules and supplement the educational program with elective courses.

The cultural component was the course’s main element: students from China learned Russian art, traditions, holidays and cuisine. For example, one of the classes was devoted to the painting of wooden dolls (matryoshkas), which students took home as a souvenir.

Cooperation between the NUST MISIS Department of Economics & Production Organization and the AGH Faculty of Management started more than 50 years ago, thanks to Professor Vladimir Romenets and his doctoral student Veslav Vashkilevich, who eventually became the dean of the AGH Faculty of Management. Since then, an exchange of students between the universities as part of a summer industrial internship has taken place annually.

Speakers were invited to deliver speeches on thematic sessions devoted to the internationalization of education. This process can, to a large extent, determine the competitiveness of graduates in the labor market, as well as the competitiveness of universities in the world educational space.

Associate Professor Varvara Danilina, the head of the NUST MISIS English-medium master`s program for Communications and International Public Relations, delivered a lecture on the attraction of international applicants to English-taught master’s programs. The topic sparked interest and gathered more than 100 representatives from some of the world`s leading universities.

“Our program is unique, as it is the only English taught program for communications and public relations in Russia. Master`s degree students from Russia and from around the world study together in an English-speaking environment, develop intercultural communications skills in practice, and work on PR projects in international teams. Our know-how is to involve international students in the educational process as early as possible. Even before official enrollment and arrival at the university, international master`s degree students receive all the necessary learning materials and tasks, and start working in international project teams with those who are already at NUST MISIS. As a result, international students immediately feel part of the university and the program”, said Associate Professor Varvara Danilina.

According to Olga Ushakova, the head of the project for NUST MISIS international master`s degree programs’ development, “Any university that implements English language programs instantly becomes more attractive to international students and lecturers. Additionally, a school’s reputation also plays a significant role. Our university attracts international students due to our established reputation in the academic community. More importantly, the successful implementation of English language programs has led to the fact that international students recommend our programs to other applicants. As a result, the 2016 numbers far exceed last year’s, as NUST MISIS increased the number of applications and set of documents for English taught programs by 400%. The competition for every available student spot is up to 8 people, which is double last year’s amount”.

Thanks to academic mobility programs, the high percentage of international students, and English-taught master`s degree programs, NUST MISIS has successfully increased its competitiveness in the world educational space. The growth of the international students` ratio has become one of key factors allowing NUST MISIS to improve its positions in the QS World University Rankings — 2016, where the university rose 100 positions from its 2015 rank. Focusing on the development of English language studies, the university is planning to implement new short-term programs in addition to existing ones.

Two of our Master’s programs have received ASIIN accreditation

ASIIN (Accreditation Agency for Degree Programs in Engineering, Informatics, the Natural Sciences and Mathematics) is one of the most important quality assurance institutions for technical and scientific study programs and this German-based agency accredits and advises institutes of higher education throughout Europe.
