NUST MISIS Students Will Intern at CERN

On June 30, diplomas were awarded to graduates of NUST MISIS and CERN joint educational program “Prospective Technological, Methodical and Material Solutions for New Physical Effects Searches”. Nine of the best graduates, including students of NUST MISIS and Lomonosov Moscow State University, received an invitation to intern at CERN with the possibility of further employment.

The educational program “Prospective Technological, Methodical and Material Solutions for New Physical Effects Searches” was developed by NUST MISIS in collaboration with CERN with the participation of the University of Zurich, the University of Naples, the Federal Polytechnic school of Lausanne, Imperial College London, and others.

Based on the results of the final exam, from 16 students 9 best graduates were selected. They received diplomas of successful completion of the program and an invitation to an internship at CERN. Ekaterina Kryukova, a student from the MSU Physics Department, won the first-degree diploma.

“I am very grateful to all the organizers of this program. The course covers a variety of topics, from machine learning to high-matter physics. I think all this will be useful in future research activities”, Ekaterina said.

For some of the students, participation in the program allowed to start research work on MegaScience projects implemented at CERN, LHCb and SHiP, as part of NUST MISIS research teams.

“It is a great honor for NUST MISIS to participate in such projects. Many young scientists during their training found effective engineering solutions, which were then implemented in the framework of MegaScience projects”, commented Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISIS.

This is the second year of the program, which is open to everyone who wants to get and deepen their knowledge in the field of high-energy physics, physics of interaction of particles and radiation with matter, and particle detector technologies, as well as modern methods of data analysis, including machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies.

As noted by the scientific advisor of the program, Professor Andrey Golutvin and the program coordinator, Professor Vladimir Shevchenko, in 2020/2021, the program will continue with a special focus on the study of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

“We will modernize our program. We will have a new course of lectures entirely devoted to the methods of machine learning and the application of these methods in both basic science and applied physics”, said Professor Golutvin.
