At the initiative of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation, NUST MISIS is now heading the technical committee on the standardization of “Solid Mineral Fuel” that started operations earlier this year. Anatoly Yanovsky, Deputy Minister of Energy, announced the development during the 26th International Scientific Symposium "Miner`s Week-2018"`s plenary session. NUST MISIS Professor Svetlana Epshtein has been appointed as the committee’s head.
The committee’s membership includes some of the largest coal, chemical, and energy companies in Russia, such as SUEK, Mechel, Kuzbassrazrezugol, VostSibUgol, OGK-2, and the Coal-Coke Company, as well as academic and industrial institutions like the West Siberian Test Center, which is the largest domestic analytical center in Russia. The committee hopes to standardize lignites (soft coals), coal, anthracites (hard coals), and thermal coals.
“Throughout last year, NUST MISIS was the key platform for the Ministry of Energy`s specialized events devoted to industry problems, extraction, safety, ecology, etc. That is why the Ministry of Energy`s assignment for NUST MISIS to conduct Committee cases for the standardization of coals has become the logical continuation of the University`s active work in this field”, emphasized Anatoly Yanovsky.
One of the committee’s main goals is to remove barriers for Russian companies to export coal to China. Among the tasks currently being worked on, the committee is trying to get approval for the sampling method used to measure the characteristics and quality of exported types of coal.
“As a leading Russian university for training engineers for Russia`s major economic sectors, NUST MISIS plays a key role not only in the formation of the specialized labor market but also in the development of innovative technologies. In 2016, the Expert Mining Council which includes leading scientists, representatives of both government entities and the business community, was created [for] decision-making in the development of Russia`s mining sector”, said Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISIS.
“Miner`s Week” is the world’s largest international industry event involving leading scientists, heads of government entities, and some of the University`s largest partner enterprises from 50 countries. “Miner`s Week — 2018” starts a series of events to celebrate the University`s 100th Anniversary. Throughout the year, NUST MISIS will act as the center of anniversary celebrations and a venue for many commemorative events to inform the general public about the University`s history and accomplishments.
