Metalloinvest and NUST MISIS to Launch Laboratory for Development of New Steel Grades

The Oskol Electrometallurgical Plant (OEMK) and the Stary Oskol Technological Institute, named after A.A. Ugarov (NUST MISIS branch), will create a steelmaking laboratory based on OEMK’s established work. This laboratory will allow Metalloinvest to reduce the cost and accelerate the development process of new high-quality steel.

Avacuum-induction furnace with a maximum load of 60 kg will become the laboratory’s core. The furnace enables workers to quickly conduct meltings in small quantities, which are currently impossible to conduct with the industrial 150-ton furnaces at OEMK. The first trial melting has already been done in new furnace.

It will be possible to produce special steels and alloys of a complex composition in the conditions of the steelmaking laboratory. The vacuum treatment will help to remove impurities of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and the micro-impurities of non-ferrous metals, as well as to obtain high-purity metal, meeting the requirements of special metallurgy.

“The new lab will allow OEMK to solve almost any problems for the development of new steel grades that are in demand on the global market of quality steel products”, said Andrey Ugarov, First Deputy CEO at Metalloinvest.

“The joint steelmaking laboratory will provide a synergistic effect for OEMK and our institute. The company is in need of new steel grades, and scientists from our University will be able to apply their knowledge in the field of metallurgy to conduct experiments”, emphasized Vasiliy Rassolov, from the Stary Oskol Technological Institute named after A.A. Ugarov.
